Words

A well of words.

Poems, reflections, and writings from a lifetime of learning to live — imperfectly, the way I do it.

Q & A

If you’d ask me how to live,
I would say, “Love.”
If you’d ask me how to love,
I would say, “With your every waking breath.”
If you’d ask me how to worship,
I would say, “LIVE!”

Enigma

On bended knee I seek in vain
The meaning from whence I came.
A glimpse, I plead to ease the fear —
Unyielding quiet feeds my tears.
Within these walls the silence grows
Like a thunderous, eerie horror show.
Speak to me, I bellow without a sound —
Some reason for living must be found.
Not a word spoken, nothing uttered,
Deep within my stomach fluttered.
Deeper still, at serenity I grasped;
A calming peace came at last.
A remembrance is the only key —
this memory alone has set me free:
Upon the dawn of my existence,
I decided who to be.

Finding Now

Look to the past to remember.
Look to the past to learn.
Look to the future for hope.
Look to the future to dream.
If you are looking to live,
it can only be done in the present.

Legacy

If I should look upon the sea,
what reflection would there be?
If I should look through my child’s eyes,
would I laugh or want to cry?
If I should look throughout my life,
did I love in times of strife?
If I should look upon the world,
have I cast stones or given pearls?

Power

Yes, it was I that led the charge
into the abyss looming large.
Let not my ego tell the lies
that it was somehow otherwise.
The fog of lies can blind a man
to his true path that lies at hand.
Then trapped is he in his own snare,
with nothing left to pay the fare.
The pain of truth can set you free —
just take Responsibility.

The Circle of Life

Rows of wooden skeletons firmly planted in the ground.
Their lives and colored beauty, they’ll share before the year goes fully round.
It is winter now, and at their barren limbs we stare.
In spring’s warm breath they start to dress, no longer going bare.
In summer’s glowing warmth they wear lush coats and shawls.
Autumn brings a change of tints, weaving the tapestry of fall.
As their quilts turn brown, they strip their clothing down.
From whence they came, they are again. The year’s gone fully round.

Because of You

It started with a labor of love —
the pain and tears to bring forth life,
the dedication and sacrifice never spoken of,
to nurture and protect your only drive.
When I fell, you were there.
When I cried, you wiped the tears.
When I failed, you taught me life is not fair.
When I won, you were the very first to cheer.
As I grew, you guided and defended,
made me accountable and responsible;
to my walk with God, you tended;
your wisdom showed me all things are possible.
My journey through life propels me far —
Mom, thank you for the role model you are.
I am not the source. I’m the outlet. Everything good that flows through me is plugged in somewhere higher first.Solrac
You can breathe for eighty years and never take one real breath. Being alive is a pulse. Living is a choice.Solrac
A vision is but a lingering dream until you put action behind it.Solrac
Fear doesn’t leave when you get brave. It just stops driving. Courage isn’t kicking the passenger out — it’s deciding who holds the wheel.Solrac
Name it out loud — the weight you carry. That’s how you finally set it down.Solrac
Grace ran the whole length of my life. The last place I let it land was on me. If God can forgive the years I wasted, who am I to keep the receipt? Forgive yourself.Solrac
We manage activity. God manages results.Solrac

Peek-a-Boo Morning

On a Friday morning I played Peek-a-Boo with God. Sitting on a balcony watching the sun rise, I marveled at its majesty. The ever-changing palette of grays and whites was followed by the pastels of light blues, and shades of orange and yellow. The clouds danced across the sky on different planes — dark gray in the front, light gray or white in the rear, backlit in fluorescent tones of tangerine.

The pace of the heavenly show was as mesmerizing as the beauty of the choreography. Then, at the appointed time, the star of the show slowly made its entrance — a celestial, chromatic, orangish ball. The light of the world.

Yes, indeed, it felt as if God was saying good morning. Suddenly, it disappeared behind some clouds, yet, like fingers reaching out to me, a few rays exploded through the darkness. As I caught my breath, the clouds quickly moved on and the full brilliance of the sun was shining bright — so much so that it appeared to shine a path on the sea heading directly to me.

Quickly enough, it hid again amongst the clouds. Then, Peek-a-Boo, I see you! It seems that God was playing with His children. Thank you, Lord, for letting me see Your majesty in the morning, for letting me feel Your warmth, for inspiring my creativity, and for letting me imagine our game of Peek-a-Boo.

Great Expectations

“Most people expect mediocrity — and miss greatness even when it’s staring them in the face. I’d rather expect great things every day, and be wide awake when they come.”

The words led to a book.

Everything here is the short form. LIVE — Stop Existing. Start Living. is the long one — the method, the failures, the faith, and the decision that changes everything.
